The register is silent. The family tree is not.

A UAE trader buys goods from a supplier in India. On paper the two firms look like they compete openly. Both owners feel unrelated. The bank sees nothing unusual. Then one detail surfaces at a family lunch. The wife of the UAE owner and the Indian owner are first cousins.

That is fourth degree by affiliation. Under UAE tax law, that quietly makes the two firms related parties. The transactions between them are now inside the arm’s length lens, whether anybody enjoys the thought or not. The trade does not need to change. The disclosure will.

The definition catches more than most owners assume. It reaches spouses, parents, children, siblings, in laws, adopted children and step relations, and it looks through them to the entities they control. Two businesses that appear entirely independent can be related through a marriage nobody thought was relevant.

When Fourth Degree Kinship

Two practical moves for a family group

01. Build a related party map

Ask the CFO for a related party map that includes in laws, adopted children and step relations, refreshed every year, and attach it to the tax file rather than to a folder called personal.

02. Set a standing year end question

Have any weddings, adoptions or estate transfers happened this year that the map does not yet show.

None of this is about accusing a supplier of being connected. It is about being able to answer honestly if the question is asked. A one page family tree, refreshed annually, is usually enough to close the gap between what the register shows and what the family knows.

The people who forget to draw the tree are the same people who cannot explain it later.
